Last summer I got a request from Beo, a dude I met at the JiuJitsu classes I’ve been taking the last two years. He’s the CEO of Bokscoaching : A training and coaching facility from Zwolle, who will be celebrating their ten year anniversary real soon. He asked me if I wanted to come by, get to know the company, and make an art-piece commemorating their ten years of existence.
Bokscoaching works to improve your personal or business life with the three main steps used in boxing to effectively hit someone in the face: Balance, focus and impact. Without the right balance and focus where you want to strike, the impact won’t be there. Just like in life!
I decided to show a journey illustrating those three steps. The beach is the coaching you get at their company. You get to contemplate your decisions, and get to plan out your next steps in life. This is your personal search for balance.
When you find your balance, you can start focussing on the things you want to achieve. The person rowing towards the big ship is focussing on the place he/she wants to go. The ship on the horizon depicts the potential impact you can have in life!
The illustration style is loosely based on the beautiful and inspiring Japanese woodblock prints made in the 20th century by artists like Kawase Hasui.
We screenprinted the design in 4 colours on 250 grams of biotop paper and framed it with a black border. We also made 30 risoprints, and framed those as well for every employee of Bokscoaching to take home with them.
After that I made a linocut ‘Artist seal of approval’ and printed this on top of my illustration in red. This is a nod to the Japanese woodblock artists who used to sign their work like that.
This was one of the coolest project I got to do lately, and I’m superhappy with how it turned out! Thanks for the beautiful project and your trust in me Beo! See you on the mat!
